I guess the writing was on the wall when Microsoft bought Skype back in 2011. But the news is now official. The once ubiquitous messenger app, Microsoft Messenger, is soon to be retired and replaced entirely by Skype. The original announcement was made back in November, that Skype would be the long term replacement for Messenger. But now Microsoft has informed users that have until March 15th to migrate their accounts, as Messenger will be turned off completely. The email sent earlier this week stated:
“On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together.
Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You’ll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet."
It doesn’t really make sense for Microsoft to continue development, support, and marketing, of two fairly similar apps. Many would argue that Skype, especially on mobile devices, has a leading edge anyway. So the announcement does make sense. But it is certainly the end of an era for many. You have until the 15 of the March to say your goodbyes.
