How IT is Changing the Construction Industry

$

In the space of a generation, Information Technology has changed the way the world works. It touches all sectors and industries and pushes the boundaries of what was previously challenging, difficult or dangerous. It has also democratized access to information - armchair academics can do their own research from the comfort of their own homes, students can attend university without leaving the bedroom and freelancers can work for people they’ve never met face to face.

These advancements are often the results of technology trends, cycles of improvement, innovation and updates. These constant cycles lend themselves well to the early adopters - those who want to take advantage of bleeding edge advancements before their peer group does.

What we want to discuss today is how technology has made both massive and positive strides in the construction industry. Construction, more than many other industries, is constantly under pressure to decrease costs whilst improving productivity. These two aims can often be hard to reconcile. Nonetheless, the industry has reacted by looking to make these savings and advancements by using and deploying Information Technology in new and innovative ways.

An evolving industry

Let's take a look at some of the ways that IT has changed working habits in the construction industry. We’ve identified the following areas where progress is being made:

 1. Video and audio recording
 2. PDF annotation
 3. Picture Board
 4. Offline access
 5. Data editing;

To discuss how these changes work, we’ll use a rolling example. A local soccer team has been promoted to the top league in the land and as such they are obliged to make some changes to their aging stadium in order to comply with safety standards and boost capacity.

Video and audio recording

The ability to capture data directly from a construction site in its most natural format is one such area.  If we were to think about how many important visits are carried out on a premises that provides important feedback for clients, technology plays an important role here.

Stadiums are granted safety certificates from local authorities before any match can go ahead, which naturally means that an inspection has to occur. Construction doesn’t always mean brand new developments, it can also encompass renovation, expansion and repair.  In one such instance, the power of capturing the audio feedback of a health and safety inspector alongside visuals of areas that they’re concerned about is very powerful. No longer do you need to wait for a scribe to compile and send the notes. Uploading assessor feedback directly to a private collaboration area allows remedial work to begin almost immediately.

PDF Annotation / Redlining

Part of any such remedial work may well include revisiting architectural designs and diagrams.  In the past, looking at huge stadia layout may have involved vast sheets of paper, several project staff and a considerable stretch of time. Using technology, all of these hard set requirements can be removed. Designs and discussions can be held digitally without obliging key personnel to stop working and travel.

One ability we’d highlight here is the ability to add annotations and red pen PDFs. Being able to scribble an update or note onto any PDF document from a mobile device allows that feedback to be transmitted to all interested parties. Imagine the time saved on our stadium renovation when a lighting engineer can simply log into a specific area to look at changes he has to make in specific parts of the stadium to improve customer safety.

Picture Board

We can follow on from the above by looking at how quicker access to visuals can work. The most obvious aspect that we’ve already touched on is the ability to upload files directly from a site. An application like SharePlus allows images and graphics to be geotagged, which saves having to set up a term store or metadata column for them in SharePoint. This comes in handy if more than one stadium is being worked on at one time, especially by the same engineers.

A second, less obvious example here is when images are consumed by those onsite. Image renders, new CAD diagrams and so on can easily be provided and uploaded by office staff for those on the construction site. Using the power of visual storyboards, a dialogue can be evolved alongside relevant imagery and renders. Going back a few years, this type of collaboration would have been very expensive.

Offline access & data editing

Now, we can guess what you’re thinking… there’s a massive red-herring in the room.

Offline access.

Whilst working on football stadiums may entail some degree of internet access, other such locations may not. Most of the above facilities work with a stable connection or (dare we bring it up) a working VPN connection. Does the lack of connectivity represent a weak spot?  We don’t think so.

We think that this can be a positive thing as it offers reduced bandwidth and data costs.  Which is why we’ve built an offline capability into SharePlus. Having a local copy of your files that can be edited and worked on whilst out of the office is, obviously, very handy.

Besides the obvious cost efficiencies, there is a productivity boost when you ensure essential colleagues aren’t tied to either an office or an internet connection. This allows reports to be started, edited and modified whilst on the go - changes can then be uploaded, reconciled and distributed to the relevant people once a connection has been restored.

Change the way you work

IT has certainly come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Some pieces of technology allow you to apply new working practices and to turn traditional negatives into a cost efficiency. All of the above discussed sections can be achieved with a raft of products. Or with SharePlus, just the one.

We’ve got the experience and the skills to help your relevant people make the right decisions, not just the decision makers. Technology, in our view, can help everyone improve their working practices.

A little over two years ago, another Infragistics blogger took a look at the disparity between different phone OSs and the apps available in their app stores, particularly the top 100 most popular apps. The conclusion that he came to was that the gap was closing, but there were still some obvious holes in availability. Today, we're revisiting this topic. It's amazing to say but the gap has closed EVEN MORE and there is almost total parity between these operating systems and the apps reviewed. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself!

3 Mistakes to Avoid When Mobilizing SharePoint

$
0
0

Are you reading this article on a phone, portable device, or any other interface that isn’t your home or workplace PC? If so, you’re far from a minority; an increasing amount of Internet traffic is being generated from non-desktop devices. And we’re doing more on the Internet from those devices than ever before - from photography to social networking to banking to using maps or discovering new gems of information.

And when it comes to the enterprise, the same patterns that began in the consumer market are now common in our professional lives. More and more of us are consuming work related content on both enterprise-provided and personally owned devices. Email is by far the dominant factor here, but connecting to colleagues via enterprise social networks or sharing documents from various content hubs are becoming more commonplace too. Whether you think all this connectivity is bad or not, it’s increasingly expected that colleagues be on call wherever they are.

What we want to discuss today are three of the more common pitfalls that we’ve seen over the last few years when companies try to bring SharePoint to employee devices. The Consumerization of IT means your people expect the UI on their mobiles to be as good as the UI on their favorite consumer apps, so a poor user experience really is unforgivable. Bearing this in mind, what are the major pitfalls and, more importantly, how can you avoid falling into them?

Mistake 01: Insufficient Testing

Real Estate agents have an expression that you’ve probably heard before: location, location, location. When it comes to app development, we’d go with something similar: testing, testing testing!

We can’t emphasize enough the importance of rigorous testing. No matter how important or impressive the feature set you’ve built for your company’s SharePoint, if the mobile experience is poor, no one will give it a second look. Many firms invest serious time and money into developing productivity apps, so you don’t want to release it only for mobile users to discover multiple errors. Not only is that embarrassing for you, it can also be seriously costly

The need for testing only becomes more pronounced in SharePoint. While it’s now changing, SharePoint was never principally designed for the mobile user. This means a lot of attention should be given to the mobile experience that SharePoint brings when you’re developing an app.

Since the release of SharePoint 2013, the development community has had access to something known as device channels, which allows designers to create a specific template/master page for specific devices and dimensions. Some community members (such as Eric Overfield) thought that this was somewhat unwieldy and focused instead on implementing responsive web design principles within a series of SharePoint templates.

Both approaches lend themselves to the idea of testing across various devices and resolutions and they shouldn’t be taken lightly. Basically, whatever approach you take, make sure you test thoroughly - there’s no excuse not to.

Mistake 02: Lack of Offline Access

A second common mistake we see is a failure to cater for offline access. In today’s hyper-connected world, a lack of internet access can directly lead to a plunge in productivity. If users can edit their files offline and then sync the changes upon reconnecting to the network, the possibilities for distance working grow exponentially. Stuck on the subway? Offline working lets you work when and where you want.

At present, mobile SharePoint environments require a permanent connection or some kind of VPN. SharePlus however offers a unique solution to this connectivity conundrum. By letting users work on documents offline, and then syncing these through the cloud when a connection is reestablished lets employees on the move to be productive wherever they are.

Mistake 03: Security Last

This final mistake might come as a surprise, yet so many companies lack serious checks and guards for the security of sensitive information. Threats to data loss are real and device theft can easily lead to the loss of crucial data when it walks out the door in your employees’ mobile devices. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to cancel out or at least minimize the risk.

We see many firms fail to properly cater for Mobile Device Management (MDM), or only carrying it out as an afterthought. Yet MDM is so easy to implement, and when properly implemented, means your IT managers will sleep easy at night. MDM technologies allow the remote locking and wiping of any device that may have been compromised in some way. Native mobile SharePoint apps, like SharePlus, allow for such security features even without being deployed within an MDM platform. This is useful as it acts as a safeguard against both accidental data loss (such as losing a laptop on a train) or malicious (such as a disgruntled employee not returning a laptop after leaving).

Mobile Ready

We’ve only touched the surface when it comes to a smooth mobile SharePoint experience. Nonetheless, we hope we’ve highlighted some common mistakes that we see when it comes to taking Microsoft’s communications and collaboration platform mobile.

Mobile Challenges in the Field: Construction Industry

$

In the construction industry, the recipe for success is made up of many different ingredients. There are far more variables to be dealt with compared to other industries, and can therefore lead to a level of unpredictability, resulting in project delays, pauses and extensions. So finding a solution that can help with any such problems is hugely important.

This increased complexity that comes with managing projects makes communications for a site manager far from simple. Formulating plans with stakeholders, surveyors and architects before, during and after the project, hiring contractors, preparing the site and checking requirements and regulations are just some of the tasks required. This makes communication, organization and management all-the-more important to keep things running smoothly, and yet the industry lack many of the tools and platforms that you would find in a typically ‘standard’ office.

This is largely due to one reason - a reliance on mobile. The nature of construction work means it is almost impossible to set up a permanent office space. This means workers need a platform that can perform to the level of an on-site digital workspace, but one they can take with them wherever they go.

Introducing SharePlus

SharePlus allows users to connect to their organization’s Microsoft SharePoint or Office 365 environment from any device, anytime, anywhere. It is the perfect portable solution for any firm that currently uses SharePoint or Office 365. An intuitive user experience allows users to edit and share company files, lists, images or documents and log in to email. Users are able to make changes to project documentation when offline, and a host of security features mean you can feel safe whilst doing so.

SharePlus acts as a central hub for all your projects; improving organization, collaboration and communication. Let’s take a look at some of the areas in which SharePlus can make construction workers lives easier and more efficient.

Location Services Metadata

There is no arguing that managing a construction project is a difficult task. With multiple sites and numerous suppliers, stakeholders and foremen all uploading data to your SharePoint site, it can be hard to keep track of every small detail. Location Services Metadata allows you to understand when and where any updates were made, where equipment and materials are located, giving you a clearer oversight of the project as a whole.

Search

It’s the age-old saying but it still rings true: time is money. The sharing and access of knowledge and information speeds up any process, and powerful search helps find the right documents fast. Search features in SharePlus let you find what you need - whether it’s email, people or PDFs - quickly and cleanly.

Social

In the construction industry, decisions need to be made reactively, and you want to stay in touch with them as and when they are made. The Social Module lets you discover and share ideas, keep track of your colleagues and their work, start conversations and access your personal SharePoint storage. A timeline tab provides you with a constantly updating newsfeed consisting of the activities and posts of others and yourself. This means that whether you’re on site, in head office or from outside the organization, communication with anyone is at your fingertips, and the perfect solution for the fast and fluid nature of construction.

Coordinate On-Site Meetings

When there is a lot at stake, it’s important for decisions to be made with everyone’s agreement. Construction firms require the ability to schedule meetings with all partners instantly, and SharePlus makes this possible. Using a tablet or smartphone, on-site personnel are able to sync on meeting times remotely, and never be left ‘out of the loop’.

Secure

There’s no point in having the ability to access your data on-the-go just to see it all disappear when a tablet or smartphone accidentally goes missing. Your commercial projects and sensitive data are fully protected by SharePlus, with state of the art built-in hardware encryption. You’ll never have to worry about your work falling into the hands of competitors.

Your building blocks for success

Mobile and agile working is now the driving force of many modern workplaces. This is particularly true in the construction industry, whose need is even greater due to the nature of their work. Being productive shouldn’t rely on whether you’re sitting at a desk, and with SharePlus, even an industry as diverse as construction are given the tools to effectively respond to the many challenges they face.

You can test our SharePlus yourself with a 10 day free trial on the Infragistics Website.

Connect Multiple Data Sources into one Dashboard to Discover More Insights

Did you know that between the year 2000 and 2009, the rate at which US Civil engineering doctorates were awarded followed the same rise per capita as the consumption of mozzarella cheese. So, this shows that on completing their studies, budding civil engineers develop a love of authentic Italian pizzas...right?

Wrong.

The challenge of big data is, and always has been, finding causation between events. There are plenty of examples of unrelated correlations like the one above here, and it’s crucial to be able to prove that one event caused another.

When Google Flu Trends (GFT) first emerged in 2008 it amazed spectators with its ability to predict flu outbreaks purely by collating real-time search terms related to flu symptoms. Google claimed to be more responsive and quicker at discovering trends than health providers to track outbreaks. Yet after a few years of incorrect predictions, Flu Trends was canned, and its results discounted. However, as an article in The Atlantic noted, when data from GFT and US Centers for Disease Control were combined, predictions of flu outbreaks actually became more accurate than ever before.

Businesses can learn a lot from the above two examples. So often, data is held in silos in different parts of the organization and companies make major decisions based on false correlations, incomplete figures and incorrect analysis. Fortunately, ReportPlus can help you avoid this kind of mistake.

Disconnected databases

Even the smallest organization will typically use a number of different platforms for storing and analyzing a whole lot of data. These might include:

 • Content Managers (SharePoint, Dropbox etc.)
 • Customer Relationship Managers (MS Dynamics, Salesforce)
 • Datastores (SQL server, Oracle etc.)
 • Social Networks (Facebook, Twitter)
 • Web analytics (Google Analytics, Flurry etc.)
 • Others (IMAP Mail Server, MS Excel, UserVoice etc.)

Now, when used alone these data sources are great. Nonetheless, as Jack Johnson once sung, “It’s always better when we’re together”. ReportPlus allows any user (not just your data scientists!) to bring together and play with data from a huge range of systems - from SharePoint to SQL Server to Web analytics. It’s easy to discover and display compelling trends and make decisions based on real time data analysis.

OK, I’m intrigued...show me how it works.

Hilary’s hunch

Now let’s imagine our friend Hilary. She works as a fundraiser for an international charity based in New Jersey. The organization has a variety of teams based in a number of offices around the world, and while they all connect to the company-wide SharePoint, different units use additional systems to get their work done.

 • As a fundraiser, Hilary mainly uses Salesforce to stay up to date with her calls to donors. US and Canada fund raising is currently going great, yet EU fund raising has been down the last few years. It’s generally assumed this is because of the current economic climate in that market.
 • Meanwhile, the marketing team use Google Analytics to monitor engagement with the website. Worldwide, engagement is more or less the same everywhere - website visitors in all key markets love the site and its content.
 • Finally, the charity’s HR maintain a list of current employees in a SharePoint list.

Now, Hilary has a hunch that the organization could grow in Europe if only it employed more fundraisers there. But how can she prove it to her boss? She’s no IT whiz and with data tools provided by different firms (Microsoft, Google and Salesforce), it seems impossible to analyze the data. But then she heard about ReportPlus.

Using ReportPlus, Hilary is able to easily and intuitively draw in data from SharePoint, Salesforce and Google Analytics. What does her analysis show? The organization has in recent years reduced the number of fundraisers in Europe. However, according to Google Analytics, interest in the charity’s work is as high as ever in that market. The logical conclusion? Hire more fundraisers in the EU.

Hilary is able to demonstrate her arguments to her director in a compelling and convincing manner, without the knowledge that one might expect to source so much data. Interactive graphs prove her points, make her look good and help the charity make key HR decisions.

Data + specialized knowledge = insights

So many organizations keep making decisions based on unfounded hunches and assumptions, while others use selected data correctly but are failing to tie different sources together. ReportPlus provides an essential tool for bringing an enormous range of data sources into one place and intelligently analyzing data sources side by side to find key insights.

Many companies are literally sitting on a goldmine of data which, if used correctly, can help you discover trends that will change how your business operates. ReportPlus gives you the tools to get digging.

One of the earliest semblances of human communication discovered in the majority of civilizations utilized graphical representations of real life objects to tell a story. While this served an integral purpose of aiding in survival in these early communities, when we reflect on this phenomenon, is possible to make an argument that this was the dawn of data visualization?

The Best Way to Hire Developers

The other night, I was remembering what might have been my most impressive performance in the interview process.  What makes this performance particularly interesting, however, is not how well Idid, but rather how I did well.  And the how left me feeling unsatisfied with myself and with the process.

I was interviewing for a software development position, and this particular organization’s interview process was (1) phone interview, (2) programming exercise, (3) in-person interview. The phone interview went pretty well, and the recruiter had told me that the company was excited about me – a mildly good sign, for whatever it was worth.

However accurate the recruiter’s assessment may or may not have been, the company’s feelings were positive enough to give me the programming exercise.  This all occurred back when I was in grad school, and, at the time of this particular interview, I was in a class called “Advanced Database Design,” in which we explored persistence options beyond the traditional, relational database.  This was a bit of an avant garde class, at the time, because the NoSQL movement had yet to gain a ton of steam.

When they handed me the programming exercise, I had just, in this very class, wrapped up a chapter in which we’d studied using R-Trees to store geographical information.  This unit of study included what they were, how they were used, and a bit of pseudocode to really drive the point home.  As fate would have it, the R-Tree happened to be an extremely elegant solution to the programming exercise for this interview.

The Anatomy of Winning an Interview

This exercise felt like, as they say, shooting fish in a barrel.  I recognized that the thing I had just learned was applicable to my situation, and I, well, applied it.  I ran some automated tests on it for verification purposes and then turned the exercise around pretty quickly.

The company was ecstatic, and I didn’t need to try to read their reaction through the recruiter.  They reached out directly about flying me out for an interview and told me, point blank, that this was by far the best solution they’d seen submitted to the exercise.  I felt as though I were the hero in some really lame Indiana Jones movie, where the ancient gatekeeper had been waiting millennia for someone to come along and solve the programming exercise with an R-Tree.

I wound up passing on the interview, but only because something better came along as I negotiated the details of flying out to meet them.  They were clearly disappointed, and they encouraged me to let them know if I changed my mind.  I liked the company, and this overture made me feel good.

And yet, I came away from the whole experience feeling strangely empty.  As good as it made me feel to have impressed a company so profoundly, there was no denying that this was largely a matter of luck.  Had I done the coding exercise a few weeks earlier, I wouldn’t have known about R-Trees.  Had I done the exercise a few months later, I might have forgotten about R-Trees altogether as an option.  In neither case would I have blown away my interviewers, meaning my ”unprecedented” performance was a happy coincidence rather than a reflection of me being some kind of uber-programmer.

Programmers, Don’t Sweat “Failure”

Have you ever sat for an interview or programming exercise that demanded knowledge you simply didn’t have?  Famously, if you ever have occasion to interview for Google, you’ll discover that their initial phone interview is basically like an oral midterm from your undergrad CS program’s senior-year algorithms class.  O notation. Sorting algorithms. All that fun stuff.  They aren’t alone in that by a long shot, but their interview process is iconic.

To combat being caught off guard, you probably study up before you hit the job market, making sure you can field a wide array of technical questions.  After all, you never know what they’ll throw at you.  But the thing is, you never know what they’ll ask—or what knowledge you or any of the other candidates have recently acquired that will be perfectly timed for this interview.

You may be up against someone like me who just happens to have read a white paper detailing a solution to the exact problem of which the interviewers are so proud.  If that’s what happens, well, you’re just out of luck.

And that’s why you shouldn’t feel bad.  The interview process is actually depressingly random and non-scientific.  “Failing” an interview doesn’t mean that you’ve actually “failed” at anything. It just means that you haven’t had the good fortune to read the material that would have let you pass.

Companies, Focus on the Right Things

Do you have an interview process like this one?  Do you have a process where, all else being equal, you’ll wind up hiring a candidate that just happened to read up on R-Trees?  If you do, I’d suggest some introspection to evaluate whether or not that might be a hiring process smell.

In my experience, interviews aim to understand one or more of the following three things: what does this candidate know, what has this candidate done, and what can this candidate do?  These are ordered both in usefulness (least to most) and difficulty to evaluate (least to most).

What a candidate knows is probably the least useful, since human beings spend their lives learning and what they know can change easily.  But it’s easy to evaluate. Include trivia quizzes and the like as part of your interview process, and you can figure out what they know.

What a candidate has done is a little trickier, but it’s more useful.  I mean, sure, they have resumes and anecdotes, but dissembling is always a possibility.  You can be more sure that they know what an R-Tree is by quizzing them than you can be sure that they’ve implemented R Trees by hearing them make that assertion.  But if they’ve successfully implemented it before, that’s more valuable than them knowing what one is.

But the importance of what they know or what they’ve done pales in comparison to this: “Will this person, confronted with a situation that needs an R-Tree, do the requisite research and translate that into a solution?”  That’s what you really want to know. Those last two things are just proxies for trying to know it.

I certainly don’t have any unprecedented insight into the best way to conduct interviews. Evaluating candidates is hard.  But I can tell you that the closer you get to creating evaluations for what candidates can do, the more likely you are to have successful hires.

Many great business successes have come from entrepreneurial individuals seizing the moment. A recent Forbes article picked out a number of carpe-diem moments which resulted in the birth of some of the world’s most successful and exciting companies. Being in the right place at the right time - and acting - played a massive role in Sergey Brin, co-founder of of Google’s riches. An opportunistic coup led the coupon company Groupon’s founder Eric Lefkofsky to become a world leader in his field too.

Now, while spontaneity is great, that’s not to say you should drop out of school and just wait around for the right moment to arrive - those entrepreneurs also help make those moments with effort, education and expertise. So, arming yourself with the right skills and attitudes will certainly boost your chances of spotting opportunities and achieving success. And this doesn’t just go for entrepreneurs; preparation and proactivity are essential needs for success in any walk of life.

In today’s post we’ll be looking at how technology can help you prepare and be ready to grab those key moments when they arise.

Mobile workplace

Technology has opened up so many possibilities for modern workforces. Teams can communicate and collaborate instantaneously over messaging, video and social platforms, and the Cloud means individuals can work remotely more easily than ever before - in fact, telecommuting has increased by over 80% in the US since 2005.

However, while technology can break down barriers, there remains a huge need in many industries for ‘boots on the ground’. In construction, for example, you need people on site, monitoring how work is progressing and feeding this back to head office in real-time. In sales, salespeople and buyers need to meet face to face to build trust, develop relationships and foster a human connection that technology simply cannot replicate.

And it’s here that the tech often breaks down. It’s great that your company has a state of the art content storage environment, but what good is that to colleagues who are away from the office? Well done, your sales figures are through the roof, but what help is that to a salesperson a thousand miles from your server? Having instant access to company content and Business Intelligence (BI) would allow mobile workers to make more of those moments which lead to business success.

SharePlus and ReportPlus from Infragistics are designed with today’s mobile worker in mind. SharePlus offers instant access to company content; all your SharePoint lists and libraries in one place. ReportPlus lets your people securely access your company's latest BI and represent data in interactive charts and graphs. Naturally, these two tools work together perfectly and give your workers a customizable app for their iOS and Android mobiles and tablets.

Leverage content and data - an example

In order to illustrate the power of these tools combined, we’ll compare their impact on two different salespeople’s chances of ‘seizing the moment’.

Ian and Claire work for competing footwear companies. They both have a meeting with a major manufacturer who is considering producing their shoes, but only has resources to work on one of the brands. Both Ian and Claire’s companies have pretty comparable sales figures and both use a SharePoint platform internally. The difference? Claire’s company also uses SharePlus and ReportPlus. Zoom forward to the meeting:

Ian’s sales pitch is going well. He’s described the branding, the costs, and has told the manufacturer that his firm has a healthy sales pipeline. The manufacturer asks to see the latest figures and Ian, being a good salesperson, produces a printout from earlier in the week. Things start to fall apart when the manufacturer wants to see Ian’s company's promotional material so as to gauge how credible their proposition is. “Oh sorry, we do have a TV commercial lined up but it’s back at head office, I couldn’t fit the video on my USB…”

Then Claire’s pitch comes around. When the manufacturer asks to see latest figures, Claire whips her company’s statistics on her tablet screen with ReportPlus to show a chart which is updated hourly. She can also use ReportPlus to bring attention to other exciting sales figures relating to the company’s expected pipeline and this sparks a conversation about estimated production costs. Guess what? Claire can pull all these figures onto her screen at the swipe of a finger. Not only is she informative, the whole performance comes across as slick and smooth, boosting the manufacturer’s confidence in Claire’s firm.

When asked about marketing material, SharePlus saves the day. Claire hasn’t anticipated a question about her firm’s commercials at this stage but SharePlus lets her access SharePoint remotely. She wows her audience with TV commercials, plans for a PPC campaign and other promotional material.

No prizes for who won the contract.

Carpe Diem

Successful business depends on being prepared and proactive, spotting opportunities the moment they arise. As the examples above illustrate, combining Infragistics SharePlus and ReportPlus will pay dividends for your organization and increase the number of opportunities you’re able to seize.

On September 25th we hosted a webinar titled “Step by Step AngularJS for Beginners” for the Indian region and we’d like to share the presentation and recorded webinar with you now! In the webinar, we covered:

 • Introduction to AngularJS
 • Introduction to SPA
 • Controller and $scope object
 • Controller hierarchy
 • Service and factory methods
 • Routing
 • CRUD operations in AngularJS application

You can find recording of the webinar here:

You can also find the presentation slides here.

Some of the questions from the webinar are below:

What is the $scope object

The $scope object glues the controller and the view in the AngularJS application. At the time of controller creation, we pass a $scope object as an input parameter to the controller. The controller attaches data and behavior to the $scope object to pass to the view.

Can we have multiple modules?

Yes an AngularJS application can have multiple modules. However it is recommended to have only one main module in the application. We set value of ng-app attribute to assign the main module.

What is a in ng-repeat =”a in authors”?

In ng-repeat directive, a is a variable. Using the variable a we will iterate through the authors array. You are free to give any name of the variable instead of a.

How do you rend Data from the Backend Database in the AngularJS?

You can do so using the following steps:

 • Write HTTP enabled service like WCF REST or Web API to perform CRUD operation on the database.
 • Create a custom AngularJS service either using factory method or service method. Use the $http service to make a call to the REST service or Web API
 • Use custom service in the controller by injecting service module in the controller module.
 • Attach returned data from the service to the controller $scope object.
 • Use the controller $scope at on the view and render the data from the database.

What is a Controller?

A controller is a JavaScript constructor function which hold application data and the business logic in AngularJS application. AngularJS creates a new object each time we use AngularJS controller.

What are Services?

Services are JavaScript functions that are created once per application. We can create services in AngularJS applications using service() , factory(), provider (), value() and constant() method. AngularJS provides us inbuilt services also like $q,$http etc.

What is $rootScope object?

$rootScope object is parent object of all the $scope objects in AngularJS. All the $scope objects has access to $rootScope properties.

Once again, thank you so much for your interest in our webinars – and we look forward to seeing you at a future webinar!

15.2 Volume Release is just around the corner and I wanted to give you a sneak peak of what is in store for this release!

When we ship in mid-October, you'll see new features, new updates and new controls across all platforms.  We are still heavily invested in rich-client platforms like WPF & Windows Forms, we are innovating and expanding modern mobile, web & MVC development with Ignite UI, we are releasing new exciting features for iOS and Android developers, and finally you will see leaps forward in the design-collaborate-develop story with Indigo Studio.

Our core goals for Ultimate remain the same, enabling you to:

 • Build the Fastest and Easiest Office-Inspired, Touch-Enabled, Enterprise-Ready Apps
 • Target Connected Mobile Experiences across Desktop, Tablet & Phone
 • Easily Brand & Style Apps for any Platform
 • Rapidly prototype and collaborate on app experiences before you write any code

Let’s get into the essentials and see what we did to improve these core areas of investment.

Web

When it comes to modern web development, ensuring you can use your framework of choice is a must.  We are continuing to invest in key frameworks like Knockout & AngularJS, as well as expanding our Visual Studio MVC support.  In 15.2 we've put the major efforts in refactoring all data-editors from the ground up, bringing the TreeGrid to a mature state, adding features to the Combo, improving the Data Grid, and introducing a Scaffolder for ASP.NET MVC. The final goal is to greatly boost developer productivity and provide much better experience out of the box.

Windows Forms

Window Forms is still the most widely used platform for Enterprise apps – and we are still heavily invested in new features and updates to our already deep Windows Forms offering.  In 15.2 we are focusing on expanding the capabilities of the business ready data visualization offerings of the UltraDataChart control – we’ve added new visualizations, added features improved touch and spent a lot of time ensuring you have the same experience in Windows Forms as you’ve had in WPF, JavaScript, iOS & Android with the data visualization experience.  We’ve also added ready to use Office 2013 style library files for Outlook and Excel.  Most exciting for 15.2 is the new Spreadsheet control – based on the work we did on the XAML spreadsheet, you can expect a great Excel experience without the requirement of Excel in your Windows Forms apps.

WPF

WPF for 15.2 is very customer-focused.  We’ve spent most of our time going through the User Voice requests and adding the much-needed features that you’ve all voted on.  We added a new xamBusyIndicator to make it easy for reporting the progress of a long running, multi-threaded, process; data validation added to xamSpreadsheet; new features and methods added to the xamDataChart, WorksheetTable, xamDataGrid and many more – all done to give developers an overall better development experience.

Native Mobile

Both iOS and Android received updates in 15.2.  We are moving forward with our cross-platform strategy to ensure that you get the same experience in key controls across native mobile and HTML platforms.  Most of the work we did in 15.2 centered around the brand new Data Grid control – a responsive modern native grid that we redesigned for mobile experiences.  We’ve included cool features like async load on demand, smooth scrolling for unlimited data set sizes, animations on orientation change and more.  We’ve also RTM’d the data chart, pie chart, bullet graph, gauge and barcodes, so the docs are complete and you’ll get an overall better experience when using the Android product.

There is more work we’ve done, and more exciting announcements coming when we ship 15.2.  Stay tuned for our in-depth blog posts on each Dev tools product to get an inside look on everything that we’ve been working on to add value to your subscription and help you deliver great experiences to your customers!

Answering What-if Scenarios on Your Mobile Device with ReportPlus

Chances are you’re familiar with what-if scenarios. By definition,  “A ’what-if analysis’ is a process which helps you evaluate the possible outcomes of an investment or business activity”. And while most might think it is only useful for sales opportunities, the key with what-if scenarios is the outcome. The process can be very useful to assess impacts, hypothesize on what the probable outcomes are, or even work on damage control.

 • Assessing impacts and hypothesizing are similar activities in that they imply you haven’t actually changed anything yet. You can use it to see what the probableoutcome of your decision/plan is (even though you might want to assess something while it’s happening).
 • Damage control, however, can be both part of your planning and/or a post-change activity. Again, this is not necessarily related to sales: you might, for example, be deciding on an action plan after a weather-related catastrophe, trying to manage a huge loss or deciding on what your ideal response should be as an event unfolds.

But how does this apply to ME?

Again, while priceless for salespeople, what-if analysis is not necessarily related to sales. Take a look at the following dashboard:

The price in this example, broken down by equipment type, was estimated for a 5-year construction. However, if the construction is extended due to unforeseen delays, prices are sure to go up. According to a forecast report done by Colliers International, construction costs for district malls are expected to increase by 5% in 2016, and an additional 6% by 2017.

To present this price fluctuation in your dashboard, you can include a Variable named “Increase” in the Global Filters and apply it to your widget.

You can then change the Variable value without entering Edit Mode, which will update the widget automatically.

So HOW can I try this for myself?

For more information on Dashboard Global Variables in ReportPlus, refer to the ReportPlus User Guide.

ReportPlusis a mobile business intelligence tool that not only empowers you to create dashboards, but also enables you to derive insights from your data as needed just like in the what-if analysis example above.
