Shifting Dimensions: From 2D to Virtual Reality, the UX Designer’s Journey
By Lisa Lokshina, Principal User Experience Designer & Researcher at L3A Studio and
Kristine Malden, Associate Director of Creative Strategy at Slab Design
What does it take to transition from being a UX designer of 2D apps to one who can take on exciting virtual reality projects? How much of leap do you need to take in your career to be a key player in designing immersive experiences? And what kind of new design skills will UX designers need to learn in order to take on VR projects?
This presentation will outline our personal journeys from working as UX designers for flat displays to taking on projects in the world of VR. We’ll talk about what UX toolsets we took with us from past projects, and how some of our processes have changed (and how others haven’t at all!). We will review some common pitfalls when designing for VR, how to avoid them, and what you can bring from two-dimensional design (and what you can’t).
