The future of mobile user interfaces

A few years ago mobile interfaces consisted of nothing more than simple text and monochrome icons. Web content on these devices was hardly better. But these days, users expect their mobile computing to be as sophisticated as that on their desktop. They expect phone interfaces to bounce and shine. Users are also used to getting a full bodied Internet experience on the move, often with added features like easy access to their phone camera and geo-location services.

HTML5, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone ControlsThis transformation in user expectations can be traced back to a number of technical milestones. Nokia were pioneers of phones interfaces back in the 90’s. The Nokia 3210, one of the best-selling devices in history, had a clean and simple UI that offered surprising depth and power.

Then came the Opera Mini browser. This clever piece of software gave people with very basic phones the ability, for the first time, to access a version of the real Internet. The interface made it possible to zoom in and out of the desktop designed interfaces, and clever caching so sites loaded quickly.

And of course there was the iPhone, which simply changed everything.

Infragistics understands the challenges developers face when it comes to meeting users’ interface expectations. HTML5 and jQuery are no longer luxuries, they’re the baseline. Performance across devices is paramount for the modern app. That is why we developed the Mobile Advantage suite. Designed to offer the best experience across all modern web browsers and platforms is an invaluable set of essential mobile controls, resources, grids, and data visualization tools.
